Placement of the implant (root)

After a meticulous evaluation of the situation, the dentist may proceed with placing the dental implant

Generally, this intervention is performed under local anaesthesia, as is the case for the dentist's regular treatments. A more anxious patient may take a sedative on the eve of this surgery to ensure a good night's sleep, as well as the moment of the procedure. Intravenous conscious seadtion may also be administered under the supervision af an anesthetist.

Anesthesist on action In a sanitized room, the dental surgeon delicately practice an incision in the gum to gain access to the bone mass. Afterward, prepares a small cavity in the bone to ensure that the patient receives the implant without trauma. Then he inserts the implant, places the healing abutment, closes and sutures the gum. This treatment stage lasts from 30 minutes to 1 hour ans a half, depending on the number of implants to be inserted.

In most cases, the protheses may be remodelled immediately, so they can be worn after the intervention.

However, for the lower jaw, if it is not necessary to wear the prosthesis, it is recommended not to do so immediately, so that the gum, thinner and more fragile at that location, may have time to heal adequately. The patient would thus be wises to plan his activities accordingly.

Computer-guided surgery may also be performed. Assited by a special surgical guide, the dental surgeon builds temporary prostheses before even performing surgery. This reduces by 80% the postoperative discomfort of the patient, who can leave the dental office while wearing the temporary prostheses.

To prevent any infection, an antibiotic will be prescribed. Swelling of the gum is normal and will disappear in the following week. Most people only feel slight discomfort, as experienced from a dental extraction any very well controlled by an appropriate analgesic.
